Plants For a Future visit

St Austell HE Group has been invited to Plants for a Future for a day out.  PFAF is a fascinating site of edible, medicinal and useful plants.

Dates:

Wednesday 24th February 11am
Monday 29th March 1pm
Wednesday 21st April 1pm

Plants for a Future was established in 1989 on 28 acres to demonstrate the many uses of plants with a very strong emphasis on perennial species.  The group wil learn about the land; the plants and methods of growing them; and also have an opportunity to taste some of the edible plants.

St Austell HE Group has been given a patch, “The Robert Hart Memorial Garden”, to plant up – there will be some plants ready waiting for us. People can also bring musical instruments as we always have a camp fire and sing-a-long.

Wear long trousers and sensible footwear. If it rains we will use the polytunnel, (though no camp fire!) and bring vegetarian food to share.

Please contact Katie to confirm you are coming or for further information:  t: 01726 810109/07903 564 760.    e: katie[at]sussex[dot]co[dot]uk

Penzance HE for January-February

Unless otherwise stated all sessions are held at the Lescudjack Children’s Centre (formerly SureStart), Penmere Close, PZ .  Normally in the gym downstairs.  ***Mondays 2-4pm***
The workshops cost £1.50 for families with one child under the age of 4, £2.50 for one child four or over, and £3 for more than one child over four.
We adopt the Education Otherwise guidelines and rules for the safe running of the group – please get a copy from Ruth if you don’t have one.  One important point is that during the sessions children remain the responsibility of their parents at all times – or parents should agree in advance with another adult for them to take responsibility.  The centre ask us not to bring hot drinks into the gym.  The group organiser is Ruth Boulton (01736 350887).

25 January – Shelterbox

Local international disaster aid relief organisation Shelterbox, based in Helston, will arrive with a shelterbox and erect the tent so we can get a feel of what it might be like to be on the receiving end of their work.  We may like to find a way of raising funds for Shelterbox as a group…..something we could discuss on the day.  There will be information about current relief work and why it is Shelterbox is the most successful and effective organisation for providing first stage aid relief in the world.

Please see their website for educational activities and info. here: www.shelterbox.org

1 February – The Story: ‘The lands End Peninsula – the place and people who shaped it.  How the west was made and won’

NB: This session will be upstairs in the conference room.

Cornish historian, athour, playwright and storyteller, Stephen Hall tells us the local story with slides/visuals.  He runs these shows locally throughout the summer.

“Imagine the men and women who made this extraordinary place; taming a wilderness, living through climate change at its most extreme, shaping beliefs and landscapes, creating sacred places and homes, working the land, harvesting the riches of the sea and mining beneath it.  Imagine their struggle to maintain their livelihoods and identities in a changing world.  Saints and sinners, feast and famine, wreck and rescue, rebellion, riot and invasion.  Tales of tenacity, achievement and loss…..”

8 February – Trip to Penzance Fire Station

Meet some of the fire service crew and find out what happens when they’re called out.  We will be shown around the station and shown all the equipment and an engine.  We may have the opportunity to have a go with a hose!   Additionally, they will talk about home fire risks and safety and if you don’t already have one, they will take your details and come and install a smoke detector for you free of charge.

15 February – No session (Schools Half Term Week)
